Starting in January and running through May, tarpon can be found in large numbers in the Rio Colorado. Anglers have been known to hook as many as 30 in one day. The average tarpon weighs approximately 85 lbs., but can reach upward of 130 lbs. Landing these tarpon will be the highlight of your fishing trip.
Tarpon can be found not only in fresh water but also in saltwater, and at these times affords the angler the opportunity to fish these giants in the sheltered rivers and lagoons. During calm weather throughout the year and especially during the months of August through October, tarpon can be found in vast numbers just outside the mouth of the river in the Carribean Sea.
In December and January, snook, ranging in size from 3-12 lbs., invade the Rio Colorado. The fish are numerous and it is possible to catch dozens plus in a single day. If you are looking for really big snook, fishing in the surf during most of the year shouldn't disappoint you.
Once you've had your fill of battling snook and tarpon, fishing guapote, known as rainbow bass, machaca, and mojarra is an exciting alternative. When fished on light tackle, these gamesters are extremely sporting opponents.
